Sophia Nelson

Sophia Nelson is a dancer, performer, choreographer, and emerging dance educator born in Logan, Utah, and raised in Stansbury Park, who currently resides in Grantsville Utah. Her family often jokes that she has been dancing since before she was born because of how active she was in the womb. From the moment she could walk, Sophia was constantly moving to music, dancing through grocery store aisles, around the kitchen, and recreating routines from Dancing with the Stars. What began as a childhood passion quickly developed into a lifelong commitment to the performing arts and a future career in dance and musical theatre.

Sophia began formal dance training at just two years old at Pankratz Academy of Dance in a baby ballet class. She immediately fell in love with performing and appeared in productions of The Nutcracker as a snowflake and Odette as a fairy. At four years old, she attended her first dance competition and discovered a passion for competitive dance. She later joined Dancer’s Edge Studios, where she trained for ten years in ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, tap, modern, and musical theatre. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, Sophia faced significant bullying both at school and within the dance environment. Despite those challenges, dance remained a place where she found confidence, creativity, and purpose.

A major turning point in Sophia’s life came during the COVID-19 pandemic when she was twelve years old. Studio closures and personal mental health struggles forced her to reevaluate her future, ultimately helping her realize that dance was not just a hobby but a calling. After transitioning to homeschool in seventh grade, she was able to dedicate more time to training and artistic growth. Sophia later joined the Grantsville High School Drill Team and Dance Company, where she performed all four years of high school. During her junior year, she served as choreography lieutenant for drill team and choreography captain for dance company. In her senior year, she was selected as drill team head captain and dance company artistic director, allowing her to lead rehearsals, mentor younger dancers, and help shape the artistic vision of her team.

In addition to her competitive and school training, Sophia has pursued extensive professional development through conventions, intensives, and industry programs. She has trained at Millennium Dance Complex and has worked with respected industry professionals including Menina Fortunato through the Business of Dance program Liz Imerio, and renowned choreographer Paul Becker. These opportunities exposed her to professional-level performance training, commercial dance, choreography, and the business side of the entertainment industry. Sophia has choreographed several pieces, including her work Carol of the Bells and Experience, and has performed in productions such as The Wizard of Oz, Sense and Sensibility, and Newsies. She has also performed at Disneyland and Universal Orlando Resort through dance opportunities and conventions.

One of Sophia’s greatest strengths as a performer is her musicality. She learned to read music before she could read books and began playing piano at four years old, violin at ten, and singing at twelve. Her musical background allows her to connect movement to rhythm and emotion in a unique way. Sophia’s artistic style combines strong technical training with emotional storytelling, especially in contemporary, lyrical, and musical theatre styles. She is known for expressive performance quality, versatility across genres, and the ability to make choreography feel authentic and emotionally driven.

Outside of performances and competitions, Sophia is known for her dedication and passion for the arts. Friends and family often describe her as someone who cannot hear music without moving. Whether she was practicing routines late at night, cleaning choreography after rehearsal, or dancing in public as a child, movement has always been second nature to her. Sophia credits many of her teachers, choreographers, teammates, and directors for helping shape her growth as both an artist and leader. Her experiences as choreography captain, head captain, artistic director, performer, and collaborator have strengthened her confidence and inspired her to mentor younger dancers in her community.

Today, Sophia continues to pursue dance with the goal of building a professional career in musical theatre, choreography, and dance education. She plans to continue training, performing, teaching, and creating choreography while expanding her involvement in the dance community. Through her artistry, leadership, and resilience, Sophia hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions wholeheartedly and use dance as a way to tell meaningful stories and connect with others.
